In a repeat gastronomic feat that is certain to rock and roll the Tar Heel State more than the blood glucose levels of a Brittle diabetic, those NC stalwart manufacturers of our favorite health foods, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and Cheerwine cherry soda have teamed up again this year to create the ultimate limited edition confection, the Cheerwine Kreme Filled Krispy Kreme Doughnut. Given the success of last summer’s debut offering, the two have collaborated on a combo that is sure to send even the most conservative weight watchers into a frantic search for the famous “hot now” sign that shines round the clock at Krispy Kreme outlets.

They won’t find the soda stuffed beignets there however as the creations will only be available in select grocery stores and only through the month of July. Fans of the sweet treats will be able to get their fix tomorrow as the new product will be released Friday to grocery stores throughout Carolinas, Tennessee and Roanoke, VA. But hurry, they are only available in the month of July. The partnership brings together the two infamous  North Carolina brands. Krispy Kreme is headquartered in Winston-Salem; Cheerwine is based about 40 miles south in Salisbury.

Sold regionally as a “health and pleasure” drink from the 20s through the 40s, Cheerwine developed a small but loyal following. A fun story recalls President Eisenhower traveling through Salisbury in 1953 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Rowan County. He was the first President to enjoy the NC drink and was rumored to have said, “Ike likes!”

The drink has been continually manufactured and distributed in NC since the company’s founding in 1917. A special cult-like following has kept the soda selling regionally in North and South Carolina and even inspired then-Salisbury based Food Lion grocery chain to launch a Cheerwine flavored ice-cream in 2002.

Krispy Kreme has a similarly storied past with its first NC store opening up in 1938 in Old Salem. Slow growth and controlled openings over the next five decades kept the sugary treat in high demand and newly opened outlets were often met with frenzied crowds who jammed the doughnut shops.

In the mid 1990s the company began rapid expansion beyond their southeastern U.S. base and briefly became a Wall Street darling and “overnight” success. The success became short lived as the company faced forceful competition when it encroached into New England, Dunkin’ Donuts home turf and also has also had franchise issues and widespread closings over the past several years.

According to Cheerwine spokesperson, Tom Barbitta, the doughnuts will be packed with Cheerwine-infused crème and topped with a chocolate icing and a healthy dose of red and white sprinkles.

What took them so long?

“I moved to North Carolina because of a compelling job opportunity, not necessarily because I thought it would be a cool place to live(…)

All of us within the technology community know that all the pieces of a strong, Silicon Valley-type community are all here in Charlotte.”

Raquel Velez of Escúchame, Inc. discusses the good, the bad, and the ugly of Charlotte’s growing technology community. The full article can be found on Charlotte Viewpoint.

“Lotus Boutique and Vitamin Water teamed up this past Thursday to celebrate inspired fashion. Seven local designers were challenged to showcase an original look, based on the Vitamin Water color-palette, at the Metropolitan in Uptown Charlotte. The style council judges consisted of local style experts T.Strong, Susu Bear, and Joey Hewell. (…)

‘Every single designer chose a different flavor of Vitamin Water to work with. I thought for sure one or two of them would choose the same flavor, but no!’”

An amazing collaboration that produced some very inspiring pieces! My favorite, which was the winner, was Cigi Guzman’s stellar Vitamin Water Zero “Squeezed” dress. Go check out the others at Charlotte Style Magazine!

The City of Charlotte is seeking public input on proposed revisions to the 2012 Quality of Life Study, performed under contract with University of North Carolina – Charlotte (UNCC) Metropolitan Studies Institute. The Quality of Life Study is used extensively in the City to help determine programs and services as well as allocate resources.

The City invites citizens to attend an upcoming meeting which will inform the public about the proposed boundaries of the new Neighborhood Profile Areas, which align with census boundaries to capture new census information and increase the number of areas for which data is collected.

In previous years, the Quality of Life Study divided the City and into 173 Neighborhood Statistical Areas (NSA).  Each NSA contained one or more neighborhoods or subdivisions.  The study examined 20 neighborhood variables in each NSA mostly collected from local databases maintained by the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.  The research converted the individual statistical values into NSA neighborhood ranking categories – stable, transitioning and challenged.

The meetings will also provide an update on new energy data being collected and will solicit input on other variables the community would like to explore incorporating into the 2012 Quality of Life Study, essentially answering the question, “What does quality of life mean in your neighborhood?”.

Dates and host locations across the City have been secured for four public forums:

  • Southeast District
    • Tuesday, June  21, 2011
    • 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
    • Memorial United Methodist Church, 4012 Central Avenue
      • Munday Hall
  • Northeast District
    • Thursday, June 23, 2011
    • 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
    • University YMCA, 8100 Mallard Creek Road
  • Northwest District
    • Tuesday, June 28, 2011
    • 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
    • Northwest School of the Arts, 1415 Beatties Ford Road
      • Black Box Theatre
  • Southwest District
    • Thursday, June 30, 2011
    • 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
    • Southview Rec Center, 1720 Vilma Street

If you are unable to attend one of the public meetings, citizens may email questions or comments to qualityoflife@charlottenc.gov.

Feedback will be recorded and incorporated into the final proposal from UNCC for the 2012 Quality of Life Report which will go before the Housing and Neighborhood Development Committee and Council this summer.

To learn more about Charlotte’s Quality of Life Study and the proposed changes, visit: http://nbs.charlottenc.gov or contact Randy Harris at rgharris@charlottenc.gov or 704-353-0201.

What more is there to say? A bunch of Charlotteans making burritos and delivering them to local homeless on their bicycles. Check out Andy Weibley’s video about them.

Does anyone know if they have a Facebook group or something?

Today is the last day to cast your vote for the name of the new Charlotte Major League Lacrosse team. The “Name The Team” campaign, powered by OrthoCarolina, launched April 1st, lets fans choose the name of the new team through a democratic vote.

“We believe sports teams succeed because a community of passionate fans wants to be engaged on an emotional level with the team,” stated Team President Jim McPhilliamy. “We hope to foster that type of active engagement with our fans from the outset by involving them in the process.”

The naming and identification of the new team consisted of 4 stages. The final team name, logo and colors will be presented on June 21st.

Cast your vote on the Charlotte MLL Facebook Page. If you are not on Facebook, you can vote on this microsite.

Dublin Dog and Paws 4 People are currently coming together to help raise money to provide a service dog for a ten year old boy named Clarke who cannot walk or talk but has a smile that you can see from a mile away! The Dublin Dog Foundation is currently trying to raise $25,000 to provide a lifetime of care for Clarke’s future service dog.

Meet Clarke!

Clarke recently painted with Charlotte artist Edwin Gil for a fun day out. Check out the photos of their fun filled day!

For more information on the Dublin Dog Foundation, please visit http://www.dublindogfoundation.org

On June 25th, the Dublin Dog Foundation will be teaming up with Bags for Wags to host a cornhole tournament at Tyber Creek Pub in efforts to reach their $25,000 goal. The cost per team is $40 until June 24th and $50 on June 25th with 100 percent of the proceeds going towards Clarke’s campaign. The winner of the tournament will receive a $500 first place cash prize! There will be a 50-team limit for the tournament, which will operate in double elimination format. Teams can register at http://www.bagsforwags.org/donate.html

The Dublin Dog Foundation will also host a charity bike ride on Sunday, October 9th where participants will complete a 50 mile ride from Bicycle Sport in Charlotte to the Abors in Mooreville, followed by a catered lunch and live music. Each rider will need to generate $300 in donations, of which 100 percent of the proceeds will again be donated to the foundation’s goal.
